- I don't think your problem is Packard Bell specific.

- I'm not sure why the '*' tone needs to be generated. If this is just your
- guestimate, it may be that you're just hearing the hailing tone.

- Try typing in ATA instead, to get the modem to answer. If that doesn't
- work, you might try ATO for originate.
